Razor burn, razor bumps and ingrown hair
Curly facial hair is the main reason black men suffer when shaving. Hairs curl and grow back into the skin when cut too short resulting in ingrown hairs, which in turn can result in razor bumps. Hairs that are cut against the grain also provoke the ingrowth of a hair.
Shaving with a blunt razor causes razor burn.
Luckily, there are a few electric shavers on the market designed to combat these afflictions.
What should black men look for in an electric shaver?
Black men should:
Try to find an electric shaver that pulls hairs up before cutting. This prevents cutting hairs in the wrong direction, lowering the chance of a hair growing back toward the skin.
Purchase an electric shaver that has wet shaving capabilities. Being able to shave with foams and products will of course aid in providing an irritation-free shave. Also, less friction= less skin irritation.
Buy a shaver that can guard against shaving excruciatingly close. To be honest, all electric shavers have enough of a guard on them to protect you from shaving too close. The issue only usually arises when using a manual razor.
Consider a shaver that doesn’t tug or pull on the hairs too harshly. Shavers that tug hairs or get caught are much more likely to induce razor burn.
Top shavers for black men
Here is our dedicated shaver list for black men:
The Panasonic ES-LA63-S Arc4 is a great shaver for black men for 3 simple reasons. It is hypoallergenic so very good for those who have very sensitive, allergy prone skin. We also found this shaver to incur very little friction and glide across the face, meaning less skin irritation. The fact that this is a wet shaver means that you can apply water and shaving products to your face. This further lowers friction and the likelihood of developing ingrown hairs.
